高纯氩在半导体工业中用作生产高纯硅和锗晶体的保护气体;可用作系统清洗、屏蔽和增压用的惰性气体;在化学气相沉积、溅射和退火等工艺中有所应用。高纯氩也可作为色谱载气。氩被广泛用来充填弧光灯、荧光灯和电子管;焊接保护气;在钛、钴和其他活性金属的生产中用作屏蔽气;在黑色冶金中用于吹炼特种钢。

在金属冶炼方面,氧、氩吹炼是生产钢的重要措施,每炼1t钢的氩气消耗量为1~3m3。此外,对钛、锆、锗等特殊金属的冶炼,以及电子工业中也需要用氩作保护气。
